Masterclass #22: Managing student uncertainties in classroom

Categories ,

Description

Brief Description

Young learners constantly face uncertainties in academic contexts. They deal with confusion and questions about new concepts in classrooms while navigating vast amounts of information, solving open-ended problems, and working with peers who have differing viewpoints, beliefs, and attitudes. As a result, learners often struggle with uncertainties about both tasks and relationships, which change dynamically during classroom interactions, making uncertainty management quite challenging for them.

While uncertainties can lead to negative feelings and hinder the learning process, they are also essential for triggering critical thinking and integrating new knowledge. Therefore, it is crucial to provide students with the support they need to navigate their uncertainties effectively and develop skills to manage them.

In this talk, we will explore the types of uncertainties students encounter during learning, particularly in open-ended tasks. We’ll examine student behaviors and strategies for managing uncertainty. Additionally, we’ll discuss the role of teachers and mentors in guiding learners through these challenges and identify effective practices that can help learners become more adept at managing uncertainty.

Instructor: Dr. Navneet Kaur
User Experience Researcher, UNESCO MGIEP, Delhi, India

Brief Bio

Dr. Navneet Kaur is a learning scientist with a PhD in Educational Technology from the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay. Her expertise lies in the domain of learning sciences research, particularly at the K-12 level, and in the design and evaluation of EdTech for effective teaching and learning. During her PhD, her work focused on understanding the types of uncertainties that learners experience in classroom settings, how they manage these uncertainties at individual and group levels, and the factors influencing their uncertainty management actions. She has also collaborated with IIT Bombay and IIT Delhi on the EdTech Tulna Project, which defines a set of research-based standards for the quality design of EdTech products. Her broader research interest include developing EdTech solutions to address student challenges during their learning processes, especially those extending beyond cognitive struggles, and integrating social-emotional learning capabilities within teaching and learning practices.
