Masterclass : 8

Masterclass 8 focused on introducing Blender, a free and open-source 3D CG content creation tool, and how to use it. The participants learnt to begin their 3D modeling and 3D animation career, pursue a hobby or create 3D content for education. 

The following learning objectives were achieved during this masterclass:

  • Describe key concepts in 3D modelling and animation.
  • Demonstrate how to use Blender for 3D modelling and animation.

Masterclass : 7

Masterclass 7 was about community building strategies. We looked at a particular Community of Practice (CoP), which has been working together since the last 3 years and propagating active-learning practices. This small CoP (of ~25 teachers) has conducted more than 150 sessions (250+ hours) and reached out to 4000+ participants. We will discuss the strategies to build, sustain, and grow such CoPs. 

Following learning objectives were achieved during this masterclass:

  • Identify/report the aspects required to form a community
  • Discuss the functioning of a community.
  • Present key achievements and learnings of the CoP- individual and collective

Masterclass 6: Ethics of Artificial-Intelligence-in-Education (AIED)

Masterclass 6 on “Ethics of Artificial-Intelligence-in-Education (AIED)” was held on Saturday, November 19,  from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. This masterclass was designed to introduce participants to the basics of Ethics of Artificial intelligence (AI) in Education.
Session Objectives:
  • Describe the concept of Ethics and AI
  • Describe how to take next steps and learn more about  Ethics of Artificial intelligence (AI) in Education
Instructor: Dr. Shitanshu Mishra National ICT Specialist and Information Technology Officer, UNESCO MGIEP, New Delhi
Dr. Shitanshu Mishra is a learning and educational technology scientist with over ten years of experience. He is currently working with UNESCO’s category-1 educational research institute, Mahatma Gandhi Institute of Education for Peace and Sustainable Development (UNESCO MGIEP), in New Delhi. At UNESCO, he handles EdTech research and development as a National ICT Specialist and Information Technology Officer. His research at UNESCO encompasses developing and evaluating an artificial intelligence (AI) based online learning platform to help learners improve their social-emotional skills. He is also leading the project on ethics in AI-in-Education (AIED). Additionally, he is studying the effects of social and emotional learning on individuals’ learning processes of topics such as “Climate Change” and “Global Citizenship.” After completing his Ph.D. from the Educational Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IITB), Mumbai, He worked with the Department of Computer Science and Engineering, Vanderbilt University, as a postdoctoral research fellow for two years. After that, he worked with the EdTech research group at IIT Bombay as a research scientist for one year before joining UNESCO. His research interests lie in computing education research, authentic learning, scientific temper, the development of technology-enhanced learning environments, Artificial Intelligence in Education, and Multimodal Learning Analytics.

Masterclass 5: How can teachers select and evaluate educational technology solutions for their context? EdTech Tulna: A quality evaluation framework

Masterclass 5 on “How can teachers select and evaluate educational technology solutions for their context? EdTech Tulna: A quality evaluation framework was held on Wednesday, October 12 from 3:30 pm to 5 pm. This master class was designed to introduce participants to the EdTech Tulna, a quality evaluation framework for technology based learning solutions in the India context
Session Objectives:
  • Describe the challenges facing the edtech ecosystem in India and explain the need for quality standards
  • Articulate how to evaluate and select educational technology solutions on different dimensions
Instructors: Prof Sahana Murthy, Ms Minu Nandakumar and Dr Sheeja Vasudevan, IDP in Educational Technology, Indian Institute of Technology Bombay, India (IITB)
Sahana Murthy is a faculty member in the Educational Technology interdisciplinary program at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay since 2009. Her research interest is in Technology enhanced learning of disciplinary practices: developing students’ problem-solving, design thinking and inquiry practices in STEM domains via interactive technology enhanced learning environments. Another focus area is Teacher use of educational technologies, which has led to the design of models for large-scale professional development. She has conducted several teacher professional development programs on research-based teaching strategies and effective integration of ICT. She is currently the Principal Investigator for the EdTech Tulna initiative. Before joining IIT Bombay, she was a post-doctoral researcher in Physics Education Research at Rutgers University and MIT, USA. She received her Bachelor’s degree from the University of Mumbai, Master’s degree in physics from IIT Bombay, and PhD in physics from Rutgers University.
Minu Nandakumar is a Project Research Associate at EdTech Tulna, IIT Bombay. She has completed my Masters in Education from Azim Premji University, Bangalore, and has over six years of work experience across the corporate and development sector. As part of the EdTech Tulna team at IIT Bombay, she has led the design of the EdTech Tulna evaluation frameworks, evaluated products and conducted trainings for state governments. Sheeja Vasudevan is a post-doctoral Research Scientist in the EdTech Tulna team at Educational Technology, IIT Bombay. She has a Ph.D. in the area of Biological Sciences from IIT Bombay. Her postdoctoral work at home and abroad was to understand the structure and dynamics of biomolecules using computational biology. Her teaching experience includes teaching graduates and post graduates at St. Xavier’s College, Mumbai and school children for Abhyasika,an NGO. She is passionate about making teaching learning experiences efficient and effective using technology as a tool.

Masterclass 4: Designing Learning Experiences to Address the Diversity

Masterclass 4 on Designing Learning Experiences to Address Diversity was held on Friday, September 30,  3:30 pm to 5 pm. This master class is designed to introduce participants to the basics of diversity in designing learning experiences.
Session Objectives:
  • Describe the concept of diversity
  • Describe how to take next steps and learn more about  diversity and learning design.
Instructor: Dr. Jayakrishnan M
Senior Scientist https://nptel.ac.in/ Indian Institute of Technology–Madras (IIT–Madras)
Dr. Jayakrishnan is a researcher with a keen interest in projects related to the use of Information and Communication Technologies for Development of Education (ICT4DE). During his doctoral study, he was focusing on improving In-Service Teacher Training programs within the Higher Education sector in India. Now as an independent researcher and practitioner, he is looking at how to improve the design and delivery of Online programs (Massive Open Online Courses, Small Private Online Courses, etc.) along with supporting Educational Design Research on teacher use of Learning Analytics.

Masterclass 3: Learning Analytics

Masterclass 3 on “Learning Analytics” was held on Friday, September 16 3:30 pm to 5 pm (IST). This masterclass introduced  participants to the basics of Learning Analytics

 Session Objectives :

  • Describe the concept of  reflective practice 
  • Describe how to take the next steps and learn more about Learning Analytics.

 About Instructor: Dr. Ramkumar Rajendran, Assistant professor, IDP in ET , Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India

Ramkumar Rajendran is an Assistant Professor in Inter-Disciplinary Programme in Educational Technology at IITB. Prior to this, he worked as a research scholar at Vanderbilt University USA and also worked as an Assistant Manager at NEC Central Research Laboratory in Japan. His research interest includes Learning Analytics, Affective Computing, Intelligent Learning environments, Self-regulated learning, MOOC Data Analytics, Natural Language Processing, and Deep Learning. Ramkumar received Ph.D. from IITB-Monash Research Academy, IITB, India, and Monash University, Melbourne. He served as a Program Chair and Track Chair for International Conferences like IEEE T4E, ICALT, and ICCE. He is currently the chair of SIG in LA&EDM at the Asia-Pacific Society for Computers in Education (APSCE)

Masterclass 2 : Moving Towards Reflective Practice in Teaching and Learning

Masterclass 2 on “Moving Towards Reflective Practice in Teaching and Learning” was held on Friday, August 26 3:30 pm to 5 pm (IST). This masterclass provided participants opportunities to learn reflective practice in teaching and learning.

 Session Objectives :

  • Describe the concept of  reflective practice 
  • Demonstrate using reflective practice in teaching and learning context
  • Describe how to take next steps and learn more about reflective practice.

 About Instructor: Dr. Jayakrishnan M, Senior Scientist (https://nptel.ac.in/)Indian Institute Of Technology–Madras (IIT–Madras)

A researcher with a keen interest in projects related to use of Information and Communication Technologies for Development of Education (ICT4DE). Dr. Jayakrishnan is currently working as Senior Scientist in NPTEL and is also part of the Academic team that manages the B.S. Degree in Data Science and Applications at IIT Madras. As part of the research work I was part of the design and implementation team of 3 large scale (Between 1000-5000 participants) In-Service Faculty Professional Development workshops delivered through A-VIEW system.

Masterclass 1 : Introduction to Instructions design 

The Masterclass on Introduction to Instruction Design was held on Monday, June 13, 2022 from 6 PM to 7:30 PM (IST). This masterclass  provided participant opportunities to explore the use of principles of Instructional Design in your teaching.

 Session Objectives : 

  • Describe the terms ‘Education’ ‘Teaching’, ‘Instruction’ and ‘Training’. 
  • Describe the term ‘Instructional Design’. 
  • Analyse three fundamental questions in the Instructional Design process.
  • Describe current trends in the instructional design field.

 About Instructor: Dr. Briju Thankachan

Dr. Briju Thankachan earned his PhD in Instructional Technology from Ohio University, USA. Dr. Thankachan is currently serving as the Executive Director of EdTech Society and a Visiting Scientist at the Interdisciplinary Programme in Educational Technology (IDP-ET) in Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay, India. Previously, Dr. Thankachan served as the Director of Curriculum and Assessment Design and Improvement at the Ohio University USA. Dr. Thankachan developed the Instructional Decisions Model (IDM), to help educators make better decisions in the learning design process.
